Aquatic Dumbbells
Aquatic dumbbells will feel very light until they are under the water. I recommend Theraband, available on Amazon. The red is light. The green is medium. The blue ones are heavy. During exercise sessions, these are utilized for upper body strength exercises, added resistance during cardio exercises, and lower body stabilization exercises for balance.
Aqua Discs
For clients with arthritis in the hand or weak grip, aquatic dumbbells might be too challenging. An alternative to aquatic dumbbells is exercise discs. The above disc can add resistance without requiring a sustained grip, which may increase comfort in the hand while exercising.
Aquatic Gloves
Aquatic gloves offer some resistance during warm-up exercises or may be used instead of aquatic dumbbells for a lighter load during resistance/strength exercises. These create a webbed hand appearance which creates more drag, therefore increasing resistance for strength training the upper body.
Water sock or shoes
These are not required, but may be more comfortable to the participant depending on the texture of the pool floor. If you have diabetes or neuropathy in the feet, you should wear water shoes to protect your feet.
