Dumbbells

For most beginners 2 lb dumbbells are a good starting weight for upper body exercises.

Ankle Weights

Ankle weights anywhere from 1 to 3 lbs are a good starting place. I often use about 1.5 lb the green ones for beginners.

Exercise Ball

A small unweighted exercise ball is great for upper body warm-up exercises, hip adduction, and back support.

Stretching Strap

For stretching I recommend a strap like the above one. It is great to use for seated hamstring stretches.
